At Styled by STEM, mentors do more than share knowledge—they inspire confidence, encourage perseverance, and help girls envision futures they may have never thought possible. Whether you’re a STEM professional, educator, college student, entrepreneur, or community leader, your experiences can make a lasting impact.
By becoming a mentor, you’ll help young women develop the skills, confidence, and support they need to succeed academically, personally, and professionally.
Who Can Become a Mentor?
We welcome mentors from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds, including:
You do not have to work in a STEM field to make a meaningful impact. We also welcome professionals whose leadership, career experiences, and personal journeys can inspire the next generation.
Mentor Eligibility
To become a Styled by STEM Mentor, applicants should:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Demonstrate a commitment to supporting and encouraging youth.
- Complete the Mentor Application.
- Successfully pass all required background screenings.
- Participate in mentor orientation and training.
- Agree to uphold the Styled by STEM Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policies.
- Commit to regular communication and engagement with assigned mentees.
- Model professionalism, integrity, respect, and positive leadership.
Previous mentoring experience is welcome but not required.
Mentor Expectations
- Build positive, supportive relationships with students.
- Encourage academic achievement and personal growth.
- Help students explore STEM careers and educational opportunities.
- Share professional experiences and career advice.
- Meet or communicate with mentees according to program guidelines.
- Participate in mentor trainings and check-ins.
- Support students during workshops, STEM Saturdays, and special events when possible.
- Respect confidentiality and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
- Promote inclusion, curiosity, leadership, and lifelong learning.
Mentors are not expected to have all the answers—your willingness to listen, encourage, and invest in a student’s future is what matters most.
What Mentors Do
- Encourage goal setting and personal development.
- Discuss college and career pathways.
- Review résumés and scholarship essays.
- Conduct mock interviews.
- Introduce students to STEM careers and industries.
- Lead workshops or career talks.
- Assist with STEM projects and competitions.
- Provide networking opportunities when appropriate.

Time Commitment
We understand that schedules vary, so we offer flexible mentoring opportunities. Mentors may choose to:
- Meet with students monthly.
- Participate in quarterly workshops.
- Volunteer during STEM Saturdays.
- Support seasonal events and summer programs.
- Serve as virtual mentors when appropriate.
- Speak at career panels or special events.
