This Week at the After-School STEM Academy
Students are exploring how environmental science, machine learning, manufacturing, and subtraction work together to understand problems, recognize patterns, build solutions, and measure results.
Environmental Science
Students investigate ecosystems, natural resources, pollution, and the ways human choices can help or harm the environment.
Machine Learning
Through age-appropriate demonstrations, students learn how computers use examples and labeled data to recognize patterns and make predictions.
Manufacturing
Students follow the journey from an idea to a finished product by considering materials, production steps, quality, testing, and improvement.
Subtraction
Students practice finding differences, comparing quantities, and solving subtraction problems connected to environmental and manufacturing data.
Hands-On Learning This Week
- Make safe observations of the local environment and record evidence in STEM journals.
- Sort examples and data to model how a machine-learning system learns patterns.
- Plan and build a simple classroom manufacturing challenge using reusable materials.
- Use subtraction to compare environmental observations, materials, and production results.
Resources and Special Experiences
Students will use teacher-guided visual examples, STEM journals, reusable building materials, and age-appropriate digital demonstrations. Week 2 is an on-site Academy week; no external speaker, field trip, course, or certification is listed in the current curriculum materials.
Family conversation starter: Ask your student to name one environmental problem, explain what information a computer would need to recognize it, and describe a product or machine that could help.
